Madeira makes a lovely choice when your ideal vacation includes a forest walk, an ocean view, and enough time to sit down for lunch. For a fall or winter visit, give yourself five days and a little room to change plans. You can mix Funchal's city pleasures with time outdoors without making every morning depend on perfect conditions.

The itinerary below uses one base, two possible walking days, and several easier outings. Choose the order around the forecast, confirmed reservations, and how everyone feels. There's no prize for squeezing in another stop when a slow afternoon would be more enjoyable.

What to expect from the weather

For a useful reference, Funchal's 1991–2020 climate averages show daytime highs of 22.8°C in November, 21°C in December, and 20°C in January. These are historical averages at a low-elevation station, not a forecast for your trip. Rain is part of the picture: October through December are substantially wetter there than midsummer. Conditions also change across the island. Higher ground can be cooler and foggier than the coast. Check the forecast for your actual outing, rather than relying on the weather outside your hotel. A waterproof layer earns its place in your bag. Source: Visit Madeira weather guidance

Choose a base that suits your days

Funchal: Start here if you want to combine city sightseeing with excursions. Before booking, map the accommodation against the places you'll use most. Check whether a tour collects from that exact address, and ask about parking if you're renting a car. A hotel described as “in Funchal” may still require transport to your chosen restaurants or meeting point.

Booking option: Compare Funchal stays for your dates.

Machico: Consider this eastern base if you like the idea of spending downtime around a historic center and seafront. Its heritage sights include the Fort of Nossa Senhora do Amparo and Solar do Ribeirinho museum. Check your transport to each planned outing before committing to accommodation. Booking option: Compare Machico stays for your dates.

For either base, compare the final total for your own dates, cancellation deadline, room setup, and transport costs. This guide doesn't quote room rates or promise availability.

Book your walks with the 2026 rules in mind

Visitors need advance reservations for Madeira's classified PR walking trails in 2026. Use the official SIMplifica portal, choose the route and entry time, include everyone in your party, and save the confirmation. If you're joining a guided outing, ask who handles the trail reservation. Source: official 2026 hiking guide

Read the conditions before paying. SIMplifica currently limits changes and refunds to qualifying official cancellations, such as a trail closure; deciding to rearrange your own itinerary generally doesn't qualify. Keep the unbooked parts of your holiday flexible and don't assume a paid trail slot can simply move. Source: SIMplifica booking conditions

Five days with breathing room

Day 1 Settle into Funchal

Give arrival its own space. Walk through the Old Town, pause near the seafront, and use São Tiago Fortress as a landmark. It sits above the waterfront in the historic Zona Velha. Pick somewhere for dinner before you're too tired to choose, then check the next day's forecast and transport arrangements. Source: São Tiago Fortress

If your flight arrives late, keep this as a short neighborhood stroll and move the sightseeing to another day.

Day 2 Make room for a forest walk

PR11, Vereda dos Balcões, is a useful walk to investigate if you want a shorter outing. The official description lists 1.5 km each way, starting at Ribeiro Frio, with an easy difficulty rating. The route follows a levada toward a viewpoint overlooking forested valleys. Source: official PR11 route page

“Easy” still calls for suitable footwear and a check of current conditions. Allow extra time for travel and pauses, and arrange the return journey before setting out. If conditions are poor, use a city or museum day instead.

Day 3 Spend an unhurried day in the gardens

Monte Palace Madeira combines gardens, ponds, tilework, and art in a hilltop setting above Funchal. Give yourself time to enjoy one garden properly rather than racing between several. Confirm current transport and opening information before leaving. For Christmas trips, note that the tourism board lists Monte Palace as closed on December 25. Source: Monte Palace garden

Keep the rest of the day light: a late lunch, time back at your accommodation, or another wander through town.

Day 4 Choose an east coast outing

For a longer coastal walk, investigate PR8 at Ponta de São Lourenço. The official route is rated moderate and described as 4 km out plus 4 km back. Its exposed, largely treeless landscape makes wind an important consideration. At research time, the English route page listed restrictions and signed diversions. Read the current notice before reserving or traveling there. Source: official PR8 route page

If the route or conditions don't suit you, spend the day around Machico's historic center instead. You can build a satisfying day around a town walk and lunch without committing to a longer hike.

Day 5 Keep a useful spare day

Leave the final full day open for a favorite neighborhood or an outing you've deferred, subject to any reservation conditions. Madeira's museum choices include Solar do Ribeirinho in Machico and several cultural collections in Funchal. Pick one that interests you and check its opening day. Source: Madeira's museums

Before a departure day, keep plans close enough to your base that packing and airport transport remain straightforward.

Packing for your trip

Bring walking boots, waterproofs, warm layers, sun protection, water, snacks, and navigation suitable for your route. Tell someone where you're going and plan to finish before dark. Follow official signs and closures; heavy rain or strong winds are reasons to abandon a walk. Source: official walking advice

Before each outdoor day, check the official trail-status page and Madeira weather information. Give yourself permission to change course. A good Madeira holiday has room for both an adventure and an afternoon you hadn't planned.
